The voracious Propylea-System is proving to be a valuable addition in the fight against aphids - a persistent threat to crops such as eggplants (aubergines) and sweet peppers.
A generalist predator, Propyleaquatuordecimpunctata - commonly known as the 14-spotted ladybird – effectively targets a wide range of aphid species. Just 4-6mm in length, it has distinctive yellow wings with black spots making it easy to identify.
Dual control
“Propylea-System can be used preventively and/or curatively,” says Ines De Craecker, Product Manager for Beneficials at Biobest. “It’s recommended for release at the first sign of aphids or, before an infestation is detected – as a pre-emptive measure. Feeding on both aphids and pollen, even in the absence of the pest these predatory ladybirds will remain on standby.
Resilient
“What sets Propylea-System apart from other aphid control solutions is its resilience, thriving in temperatures from 15-35°C, coupled with its ability to perform well at high and low aphid densities. Once released, this predatory ladybird immediately attacks and kills aphids in localized hotspots.”
Sustainable packaging
A highly sustainable solution, Propylea-System is packaged in 100% biodegradable materials. The cardboard cup contains honeycomb paper to protect the ladybirds– ensuring predators arrive in optimal condition. Once released, the packaging can simply be left in the crop helping minimize waste processing.
Easy to release
Ines recommends introducing P. quatuordecimpunctata in the center of aphid hotspots or, alternatively, distributing it evenly throughout the crop. “Release the individuals by placing the pieces of honeycomb paper in the crop. The lid and cup can also be used as separate introduction points, resulting in a maximum of six release points per Propylea-System unit.”
“With its proven track record, sustainable packaging, and compatibility with other biological controls, Propylea-System is proving to be a powerful, sustainable solution for growers seeking to protect their crops from aphids,” says Ines.
Propylea-System is now widely available in Europe.
